Growing up in Savannah, Georgia, in the 60’s and 70’s made for an interesting childhood. And being the son of a shrimper, who during the course of his life had five wives and a shrimp boat named Wanda, made for some great stories! My Dad, Captain Frank, was a legend around the docks on the Wilmington River and a fixture on the barstools at The Crow Bar. He never met a stranger and loved life – right up until cancer got him at the age of 56.

MY OLD MAN HAD A SAYING, WHICH I’VE TAKEN TO HEART:

THE FIRST ONE DOESN’T COUNT.

This saying became his life motto and it usually applied to his first afternoon beer, which was usually just a primer for the second one soon to follow. As a mechanic, a shrimper and a net maker, my old man spent most of his working hours in the outside world where the dog days of summer or the relentless winds of a Nor’easter could wreak havoc on his lifelong job as a shrimp boat Captain. That first beer on a hot day never stood a chance.

Now that I’ve gotten older, I guess Dad’s motto registered with me more than I realized. Truth be known, “First One Doesn’t Count “ can be applied to cocktails, relationships, golf swings, and even a piece of chicken or a cupcake at a Sunday barbecue.

Think about it, none of us learned to do anything right the first time around. We couldn’t ride a bike without falling off. We couldn’t cook a steak without burning a few hamburgers. And when it comes to relationships, well my son always tells me, “Dad, I would never come to you for relationship advice!” All of which brings me to cherish the idea of rewarding ourselves with a second chance or a second opportunity.

So, today I raise my glass. Thank you Dad, thank you Captain Frank!  Thanks for sharing your wonderful life motto. I believe I’ll have another beer, 'cause the First One Doesn’t Count. Cheers!

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO JUST HAVE ONE. REWARD YOURSELF!

THAT'S WHAT MY OLD MAN WOULD SAY.
